This week sees the arrival of the twenty-first edition of Montreal's Image+Nation fest, featuring a wide-ranging survey of new films that touch on LGBT themes. To celebrate, we'll be tackling a few of them, including XXY, (which served as Argentina's submission for the Academy Awards last year), as well as the gross-out spoof flick Another Gay Sequel (as well as touching on its predecessor, Another Gay Movie) and, perhaps most excitingly, Bruce LaBruce's gay zombie satire Otto, or, Up With Dead People.

Rumours spead that the the new film by Baz Lurhmann, Australia, may be a box office disaster with squabbles over the length of the movie and even its ending. That is until Oprah went on her show raving about how it was the best film she had seen in years. Studio heads no longer need to worry about it`s box office numbers now that millions of Oprah heads are getting ready to rush and see some are calling the Next Gone With The Wind. Reports are that Baz Luhrmann wrote 6 endings and shot 3. Does Hugh Jackman’s character survive? No one is saying though a apparently there is a twist!

However that doesn`t mean it us going to be a good movie. Last time I check Oprah also made such a fuss over Vanilla Sky. Join Ricky, Simon and Ali who returns once again for some honest, no bullshit review on the epic film. While we`re at it, we will take the opportunity to review his older films Romeo and Juliet and Strictly Ballroom.

In recent years there has been a flood of movie remakes and reboots. The majority of these films have been seen in the Horror genre. However action films are not too far behind in numbers, with recent reinventions of Get Smart, Charlie’s Angels, The Terminator series and even Indiana Jones.

Most are outright horrible but once in a while there comes along a gem and Casino Royal was exactly what the Bond franchise needed. Fast forward two years and we’re treated to the follow up film in the franchise bearing the worst title of all Bond films, Quantum of Solace.

With 1964's Goldfinger, the third James Bond story to reach the screen, the "Bond formula" had reached maturity. Screenwriter Richard Maibaum, a participant in the scripting of the previous two movies, Dr. No and From Russia with Love, had identified those elements of the series that audiences liked. So, for this film, his storyline (adapted loosely from Ian Fleming's 1959 novel) enhanced the action sequences, added more beautiful women, gave 007 an Aston Martin loaded with neat gadgets, and offered actor Sean Connery more opportunities to deliver one-liners and act suave.

In Episode 72 of The Naked Lunch Simon and Ricky with a special mystery guest take you on a time warp back before Bond was a house hold name. We’ll review the original Bond films with the original Bond, and discuss the early building blocks of the franchise.

His newest, currently in theaters, is called Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson, and it illustrates the troubled journalist's path from political rabble-rouser to caricature. We'll be essaying that particular film, as well as looking back at his 2007 Oscar winner Taxi to the Dark Side (a grueling look at detainee abuse in America's War on Terror) and the self-explanatory Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.

Tune in to our yearly Halloween tradition here at The Naked Lunch as we count down the top 31 horror films of the past 31 years. Also reviews on two Canadian horror films, The Changeling and Black Christmas.

The carved pumpkin lit by a candle inside is one of Halloween's most prominent symbols in America and is commonly called a jack-o'-lantern. Originating in Europe, these lanterns were first carved from a turnip or rutabaga. Believing that the head was the most powerful part of the body, containing the spirit and the knowledge, the Celts used the "head" of the vegetable to frighten off any superstitions. The name jack-o'-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard-drinking old farmer. He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him by carving a cross into the tree trunk. In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack, condemning him to forever wander the earth at night with the only light he had: a candle inside of a hollowed turnip. The carving of pumpkins is associated with Halloween in North America,[10] where pumpkins were not only readily available but much larger, making them easier to carve than turnips. Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their doorstep after dark. In America, the tradition of carving pumpkins is known to have preceded the Great Famine period of Irish immigration. The carved pumpkin was originally associated with harvest time in general in America and did not become specifically associated with Halloween until the mid-to-late 19th century.

The imagery surrounding Halloween is largely an amalgamation of the Halloween season itself, nearly a century of work from American filmmakers and graphic artists, and a rather commercialized take on the dark and mysterious. Halloween imagery tends to involve death, magic, or mythical monsters. Traditional characters include ghosts, ghouls, witches, owls, crows, vultures, pumpkin-men, black cats, spiders, goblins, zombies, mummies, skeletons, and demons.

Particularly in America, symbolism is inspired by classic horror films, which contain fictional figures like Frankenstein's monster and The Mummy. Elements of the autumn season, such as pumpkins and scarecrows, are also prevalent. Homes are often decorated with these types of symbols around Halloween.

Three Men and a Geek

There's so much great stuff at the multiplexes these days that Rick and Simon need to zoom out and take on a set of major directors one by one, tackling their newest features. First up - and the subject of the most debate from critics - is Charlie Kaufman's ambitious and troubled directorial debut Synecdoche, New York. Then we've got Clint Eastwood's new Oscarbait historical drama Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich. On the lighter side of things, we have veteran director Mike Leigh taking a turn for the light with his delightful new film Happy-Go-Lucky. Finally, we have Kevin Smith, whose newest comedy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno (or, as it's known in Philadelphia, Zack and Miri Make a [Bleep]) opens wide this week. We tackle all of 'em. Brazil's Fernando Meirelles made quite a splash in 2002 with his breakthrough feature City of God, a brutal and vibrant portrait of crime and street life in one of Brazil's worst slums. It has become one of the most popular foreign films of the new decade. He followed it up with The Constant Gardener, a political thriller based on John le Carré's novel of the same name and starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. After taking on le Carré, Meirelles has taken on an even bigger risk by tackling José Saramago's beloved novel Blindness with the help of Canadian screenwriter Don McKellar (Last Night, The Red Violin). Critics have been sharply divided, and the film's premiere at Cannes was less than a slam dunk. We'll cut through the hype and let you know if it's worth your time and cash, but not without revisiting Meirelles' other films.

It was nearly 10 years ago that David Fincher adapted Chuck Palahniuk's controversial novel Fight Club into a film that became an international cult phenomenon - in more ways than one. In the intervening years, many have proposed other Palahniuk-based film projects but none of them ever got off the ground - until now. Actor-director Clark Gregg bravely stepped up to the plate to helm Choke, a dark comedy based on Palahniuk's novel of the same name, and he even raked in some half-decent actors to star in it, including that ever-reliable scoundrel Sam Rockwell. The most recognized element of Mamet's style is his sparse, clipped dialogue. Mamet's dialogue is so unique that it has become known as "Mametspeak". His language is not so much "naturalistic" as it is a poetic impression of streetwise jargon.

Noted for his strong male characters, Mamet's plays often deal with the decline of morality in a world which has become an emotional and spiritual wasteland. In 1984, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross which recreated the atmosphere of a gritty Chicago real estate office in which Levine, an aging salesman, is about to be sacked.

In 1981, Mamet turned his attention to screenwriting and made an impressive debut with his first screenplay, The Postman Always Rings Twice, which he adapted from the novel by James Cain. He has since turned out a number of critically acclaimed screenplays including The Verdict (1982), The Untouchables (1987), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) and Wag the Dog (1998) and is now considered to be among the industry's finest craftsmen.

With a resume only three movies deep, Briton Neil Marshall's filmography is already amusingly contradictory. His first proper feature was the low-budget werewolf flick Dog Soldiers, which was light enough to have almost featured Simon Pegg in its cast. He followed it up with The Decent, one of the most revered horror films of the '00s, replete with doom-filled imagery and claustrophobic chills. Most recently, however, he unleashed his very own tribute to John Carpenter and Roger Miller, the divisive Doomsday. Is Marshall a new horror auteur or just another grunt in the genre's overcrowded trenches?

Spokespeople for the mentally disabled are up in arms over Ben Stiller's star-studded new comedy, Tropic Thunder, in which Stiller plays an action star who makes an ill-advised attempt at Oscar gold by starring in Simple Jack, whose tagline reads: "Once upon a time...there was a
retard." Paramount's been forced to remove promotional materials that refer to the film-within-a-film, and some have even called for the movie to be re-edited. When all the hoopla is set aside, however, is there a decent comedy to be found here? As we ponder this, we'll also take a look back at Inglorious Bastards, Enzo Castellari's breezy war film about a motley crew of army rejects who find redemption on the battlefield. Quentin Tarantino is mounting a major remake of the film - but will it be worth your time?

With not only the summer coming to an end but also our first season, Simon and I decided to sort out our top 10 films of the year ``so far``. We sat down and quickly gave our audience a break down of each pick while we reminisced on the long and bumpy road that brought us to 52 shows!

Unfortunately if you did not tune in live Thursday August 7^th, you missed our season 1 finale. We regret to inform you that due to technical problems and a break in electricity, the show's recording was lost. However we did decide to post our list for anyone interested. Feel free to read through it and send us some feedback. Hopefully at least one of our listeners will find this helpful.

10 - My Winnipeg

Directed by Guy Maddin

Guy Maddin's weird, beautiful, funny and entertaining look at his hometown.

It's a re-creation of Maddin's childhood with actors playing his family, including the legendary Ann Savage (Detour) as his mom! Maddin narrates providing a documentary-like background look on Winnipeg and its history. If you don`t want to take my word than how about that of Roger Ebert who says ...

If you love movies in the very sinews of your imagination, you should experience the work of Guy Maddin

9- Stuck

One of the best B movies in years. It gets under your skin, makes you laugh, look away, grip your seat and scream. Based on a real event in 2001 in which a woman in Fort Worth, Texas, was believed to be driving drunk when she struck Gregory Biggs, a homeless man, who became lodged in her car's windshield. She returned home, locked the car in the garage, and left the man to die. Directed by Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and starring Mena Suvari and Stephen Rea.

8- Tout Est Parfait

Reminissant of the works of Larry Clark and Gus Van Sant. This film builds a convincing portrait of a teenage boy living in a ghetto neighborhood in Quebec as he tries to come to terms with his best friend`s suicides. When all four of the kids kill themselves on the very same day, the family, friends and townspeople try to unravel the reasoning behind the suicides. Everything is Fine is the first time feature by French Canadian director Yves Christian Fournier. A killer soundtrack, some great photography and a vary talented cast across the board make this film worthy of a second or third viewing. And the director still manages to throw in a twist to the tail which makes sense of the preceding actions.

7- Rec

A brilliant horror / thriller which may start slow but eventually speeds up to a fever pitch of complete and utter terror and hysteria.The second act, is heart-stopping and caused many viewers in Spain's theatres to pass out when the set pieces begin to explode from nowhere at an incredibly fast pace. But it's the third act that will truly test your courage. The final fifteen minutes had the girl behind us crying and begging for the movie to end. It is now remade and titled Quarantine. The Remake is set for release sometime in the fall.

If anything this is a must see - horror fan or not simply for the experience.

6- Wall- E

How could you not love Walle-E?

The first two acts are the best thing Pixas has ever made. If not for the final third act it would be my favorite Pixar film. However I still stand by my words when I say this will be a film that will not only stand the test of time but will be mentioned along side the words Masterpiece in decades to come. Beautiful, energetic, intelligent and with the touches of Kubrick, Charlie Chaplin and Phillip K. Dick. This is one of the greatest love stories brought to screen in years.

5- Paranoid Park

The photography by cinematographer Christopher Dolye is worth the price of admission alone. Great stedi cam shots, long takes and some wonderful use of slo motion. The wolrd that Van Sant creates is poetic and hypnotic. He takes us into the head of a teenage boy and let's us run with it giving us a real sense of place and time. In some ways it feels like voyeurism. As if we are actually looking into someone's life.

4- In Bruges

In Bruges is directed by award winning play write Martin Mcdonagh. It stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as hitmen in hiding, with Ralph Fiennes as their gangster boss. The brilliance of the acting of the three leads would be enough to make the film worthwhile but as the film reveals its surprising depths and its deep sense of irony, you realize that you're in the presence of something great. Martin Mcdonagh is a director to look out for.

Keep track of what is going on. Nothing is without a point in what makes for the best screenplay of the year. Especially take a note of the principles that govern the main characters. Those very principles combined with their weakness are what dictate how the drama will play out.

3- The Dark Knight

Hollywood hasn't been this good in decades when delivering a summer blockbuster. What more can be said about The Dark Knight that I didn't already say in our one hour review of the film back on Episode 48. Simply brilliant. It had me return to the box office three times in three weeks.

2- Let The Right One In

Simply the best vampire film in decades. One of the best horror films of all time. A masterpiece. Mitch Davis (program director of the Fantasia Film Festival) put it best. He called it subversive, shocking, dreamlike touching, hypnotic and horrific. I say it is all this and more.

The film follows the classical rules of vampire mythology, updating each of them in startling new ways, while hitting hard as both an outsider coming-of-age film and a mysterious love story that explores the darker side of adolescent alienation.

1-There Will Be Blood

Although technically released in 2007 to secure an Oscar nomination, There Will Be Blood only made it Canadian premiere on the 4^th of January 2008. The very same day I lay my eyes on this incredible motion picture by one of my favorite film makers alive today.

Between the sheer ambition of Paul Thomas Anderson's historical epic and Robert Elswit's dazzling cinematography, this is a must-see movie. There Will Be Blood will be dissected and revered 75 years from now. Film teachers will use this in their classrooms and future generations will appreciate it more than those now. "There Will Be Blood" is a true American epic in every sense of the word and it automatically launches Paul Thomas Anderson from his position as one of the best filmmakers working today

Simon's top 10

10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Jason Segal nails it in his first starring role for a film he also co-wrote - it also turns out to be the year's funniest film so far, and it's been a crowded field. Featuring delightful turns from Segal, TV stars Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell, as well as a very funny turn by British comedian Russell Brand. I'll be shocked if it gets bested in the comedy realm this year - though it must be said, Tropic Thunder came close.

09. Stuck

Stuart Gordon's uproarious, take-no-prisoners exploitation satire might be the purest fun I've had at the movies this year - just as funny as it is grisly. Mena Suvari does her career-best work here as a seemingly good-natured nurse who exhibits a sociopathic streak when she runs over a homless man with her car, leaving him lodged in her front windshield - alive. It probably didn't reach your loca multiplex, so look for it on DVD in the coming months.

08. I Think We're Alone Now

An incisive doc about the patterns of obsession and social isolation, as viewed in the lives of two subjects whose only commonality (beyond their eccentricity) is their shared profound love for 80's pop star Tiffany. Touching and often deeply painful, with very few of its rough edges taken off, this is documentary filmmaking at its most focused and emotionally intense.

07. The Edge of Heaven

Turkey's Fatih Akin finally scores a winner after the overrated Head-On by beating Paul Haggis at his own game - here, Akin brings together seemingly disparate characters together in a complex plot that defies conventional structuring, opting instead for a rigidly "chaptered" approach which could've been disastrous but instead somehow heightens our emotional involvement.

06. Wall-E

Not Pixar's best film ever - I'd give that honor to Ratatouille, believe it or not - but a wonderful film nonetheless, one whose first act is among the most memorable sequences of the decade. Though it's unreasonable to expect Disney to try and market a whole film about a robot who lives in isolation on a destroyed Earth, it's tha tportion of the film which will resonate with viewers for years to come.

05. Let the Right One In

Fantasia Fest favorite and a possible target for a Hollywood remake, this devilish but beguiling Swedish vampire film is both touching and brutal, employing European arthouse techniques to frame its surprisingly graphic, almost Grand Guignol-esque scenes of bloodshed. See it, somehow, before Hollywood gets its grimy hands all over it.

04. Standard Operating Procedure

Errol Morris' most intense documentary yet explores the abuses committed at the Abu Ghraib detention center in Iraq - but more specifically, it focuses in on the infamous pictures that found their way into the hands of the press and allowed the U.S. military to single out a few "bad apples" as the source of the foul play at hand. Infuriating, tragic, and an abolute must-see - even if you're suffering from Iraq fatigue.

03. The Dark Knight

Christopher Nolan's incredibly ambitious and indeed very dark film about the Caped Crusader is both the year's biggest hit and the strongest refutation yet of the classically structured superhero movie - Nolan is in love with moral dilemmas and impossible situations (see Memento, The Prestige) and he (along with his brother, screenwriter Jonathan) and he injects them into a big0name summer blockbuster, thus changing the game for years to come.

02. Paranoid Park

Gus Van Sant's best film in ages is also the most evocative film with a high-school setting since Rian Johnson's Brick - casting almost exclusively through MySpace, Van Sant has assembled an incredible band of young actors, led by Gabe Nevins, whose awkward narration sets the tone for the entire film. The apex of Van Sant's recent obsession with slow, tragically inclined art films.

01. The Band's Visit*

Technically a 2007 release, it was denied Oscar consideration because of its frequent use of English. As a result, it only made it to many theaters in 2008, and it's just seen release on DVD. Eran Kolirin's modest but immensely touching film about a stranded Israeli army band is a priceless gem, worthy of placement in any year's best-list. Rent it now if you haven't yet had the pleasure.

I Think We're Alone Now follows two very different social misfits (one a severe Asperger's case, the other a medical hermaphrodite) who share one common quirk: their love of (and subsequent obsession over) 80's pop star Tiffany. We've got an interview with director Sean Donnelly. Meanwhile, Second Skin is an ambitious look at the world of MMORPG addicts and the ways in which virtual worlds can both wreak havoc upon and occasionally improve reality. Finally, just for kicks, we'll discuss one of Rick's favorite recent docs, The Nomi Song, which explores the exploits of legendary German counter-tenor / pop star Klaus Nomi.

All kinds of exciting things happen to human flesh in our final show on Fantasia's new wave of American horror films. It's harvested in harsh socioeconomic conditions in Darren Lynn Bousman's passion project Repo! The Genetic Opera. It's hung up on hooks and stripped like cattle in the much-anticipated Clive Barker adaptation The Midnight Meat Train. (Those last two were both world premieres, folks.) It's devoured and processed in all kinds of nasty ways in teen zombie comedy Dance of the Dead. Redneck flesh gets an especially grotesque treatment in the exploitation flick Trailer Park of Terror. Finally, it's dispatched through a number of inventive methods in the suicide cult thriller From Within. Even the Aussies aren't immune - their new thriller Dying Breed centers around an isolated camp of forest-dwelling cannibals! Much like tofu, however, all of this goremongering isn't worth much without the right chemistry - do any of these stand up to Ricky and Simon's high standards? Well, at least one of them doesn't. Born in Germany as the son of Turkish parents, the 30-year-old director is a child of globalization: like the musician Manu Chao, he samples and remixes elements from a diversity of cultures, material easily available to his generation for the first time. «We grew up with the video recorder - and my great role models were not from Europe. Neo-Realism or Film Noir, that didn't come until later. In the beginning I was really keen on American cinema: love, violence, action, simply good stories!» And making films enabled him to approach his own roots and arrive at the insight that tradition need not mean just raking in the ashes: «I was lucky, I had the opportunity to work in Turkey and to get to know the country in that way. We German-Turks are like aliens for those over there in Turkey. So we have to keep on going over there and examining our own history. We can learn a lot and then make it into something new.»

One of the most defiantly visible survivors of the Hollywood Blacklist was American director Jules Dassin. Following high school in the Bronx and drama school in Europe, Dassin made his stage debut at age 25 with the Yiddish Theatre in New York. In Hollywood, Dassin worked his way up to a directorial spot at MGM's short subjects unit, where he handled a brilliant 20-minute adaptation of Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart (1941). This led to a promotion to features like Nazi Agent (1942), Reunion in France (1942) and The Canterville Ghost (1944). From MGM, Dassin went to work for producer Mark Hellinger at Universal Studios, where he turned out two full-blooded crime classics: Brute Force (1947) and The Naked City (1948). Unfortunately, the late 1940s were difficult times for anyone with even the slightest leftist political leanings. After being identified as a communist by director Ed Dmytryk during a House UnAmerican Activities Committee hearing, Dassin found himself completely shut out by Hollywood. The last 1950s film which Dassin directed for a major studio was 20th Century-Fox's Night and the City, which was shot in London. Then he moved to France, where he helmed one of the most influential "crime caper" movies ever made, Rififi (1954). So successful was this melodrama that it spawned numerous rip-offs (Rififi in Tokyo was one of the most blatant) and parodies, including Dassin's own Topkapi (1964). Operating in Greece by 1959, Dassin directed his second wife Melina Mercouri in Never On Sunday (1960), a robust comedy about a joyous prostitute; Mercouri's performance was superb enough for viewers to forgive Dassin's own lackluster performance as a stuffy American moralist. Permitted back in the U.S.-studio system in the mid-1960s, Dassin directed Uptight (1968), a black-oriented remake of The Informer which proved beyond doubt that Dassin's alleged "communistic" tendencies were just a bit old hat. Not many of Jules Dassin's later, more personal films (notably an indictment of the Greek junta leaders, The Rehearsal [1974]) were seen in America, but the director's reputation, so idiotically maligned in the early 1950s, had been completely restored so far as Hollywood was concerned--even though the man himself chose to shun the U.S. for self-imposed Swiss exile.

The Hulk debuted in The Incredible Hulk #1, by writer Stan Lee, penciller and co-plotter Jack Kirby, and inker Paul Reinman.

The original series was canceled after six issues, with the finale cover-dated March 1963. Lee had written each story, with Kirby penciling the first five issues and Steve Ditko penciling and inking the sixth. The character immediately guest-starred in Fantastic Four #12 (March 1963), and months later became a founding member of the Avengers appearing in just the first two issues of that superhero team's eponymous series , and returning as an antagonist in issues #3 and #5 (Jan. & May 1964). He then guest-starred in The Amazing Spider-Man #14 .

Around this time, co-creator Jack Kirby received a letter from a college dormitory stating the Hulk had been chosen as its official mascot. Kirby and Lee realized their character had found an audience in college-age readers.

The Hulk than became the backup feature in Tales to Astonish in issue #60 until taking over the series and also renaming the book to The Incredible Hulk by issue #102!

The following are five films that my friends and I grew up with. Each film was granted repeat viewings through out the years. They all share common themes.

They all feature a great sound track not to mention numerous tracks that appeared on each film that never made the official soundtrack cd. They all were coming of age films and considered part of the the Gen X momement. They were all produced within the Hollywood system and both early and breakthrough films for each director. Each screenplay was filled with witty dialogue, and a young all star cast of which many went on to make bigger names for themselves. More importantly they all geared to be Anti Establishment film although made by the establishment. We ill take a trip down memory lane and review all five films. We will let you know if we think they still stand the test of time or were we just nieve and young in thinking they were great?

The crystal skulls are a number of human skull models fashioned from blocks of clear or milky quartz crystal rock, claimed to be pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts by their alleged finders. Contemporary mainstream scientific opinion is that the skulls are instead of 19th century or later European manufacture. None of the specimens made available for scientific study have been authenticated as pre-Columbian in origin. Despite some claims presented in an assortment of popularising literature, legends of crystal skulls with mystical powers do not figure in genuine Mesoamerican or other Native American mythologies and spiritual accounts.

The skulls are often claimed to exhibit paranormal phenomena by some members of the New Age movement, and have often been portrayed as such in fiction. Perhaps the most widely known of such portrayals occurs in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Marvel Comics was founded as Timely Publications in 1939, and is now the largest comic company in the world. It was founded by Martin Goodman, a pulp-magazine publisher whose first publication was a Western pulp in 1933. Expanding into the emerging and by then already highly popular new medium of comic books, Goodman began his new line at his existing company at 330 West 42nd Street, New York City, New York. His official titles were editor, managing editor, and business manager, with Abraham Goodman officially listed as publisher.

A comic book -- or comic for short -- is a magazine or book containing sequential art. Although the term implies otherwise, the subject matter in comic books is not necessarily humorous; in fact, it is often serious and action-oriented. Comic books are so called because some of the earliest comic books were simply collections of comic strips (most of which were humorous) that had originally been printed in newspapers. The commercial success of these collections led to work being created specifically for the comic book form, which fostered specific conventions such as splash pages.

Long-form comic books, generally with hardcover or trade-paper binding came to be known as graphic novels, but the term's definition is vague. Like jazz music (and a handful of other cultural artifacts), comic books are a rare example of an indigenous American art form though prototypical examples of the form exist.

You know the summer is on it`s way with the opening of the first blockbuster film. Iron Man opens up this week with a projected 65 millions box office take. What better way to open our show than with our review of the film and an interview with director John Favreau.

Also Simon joins me in the studio once again this week has we tackle on two heart breaking documentaries; War Dance & Young at Heart.

Last week we were not able to broadcast due to CJLO's annual award show. What happens when we take a week off? We find ourselves in a difficult spot in reviewing too many movies in one show. However we did not let that get us down. In between the hot docs we found time for The Diving Bell & The Butterfly and The Savages. Our weekly DVD contest is back as well as our phone calls to our local video store Movieland. All this and more on The Naked Lunch episode 29.

This week on The Naked Lunch - Suicide Watch

Views on suicide have been influenced by cultural views on existential themes such as religion, honor, and the meaning of life. Most Western and Asian religions-the Abrahamic religions, Buddhism, Hinduism-consider suicide a dishonorable act; in the West it was regarded as a serious crime and offense against God due to religious belief in the sanctity of life. Japanese views on honor and religion led to seppuku being respected as a means to atone for mistakes or failure during the samurai era; Japanese suicide rates remain some of the developed world's highest. In the 20th century suicide in the form of self-immolation has been used as a form of protest, and in the form of kamikaze and suicide bombing as a military or terrorist tactic. Sati was a Hindu funeral practice in which the widow would immolate herself on her husband's funeral pyre.

Medically assisted suicide (euthanasia, or the right to die) is a controversial ethical issue involving people who are terminally ill, in extreme pain, and/or have minimal quality of life through illness. Self-sacrifice for others is not usually considered suicide, as the goal is not to kill oneself but to save another.

The predominant view of modern medicine is that suicide is a mental health concern, associated with psychological factors such as the difficulty of coping with depression, inescapable suffering or fear, or other mental disorders and pressures. Suicide is sometimes interpreted in this framework as a "cry for help" and attention, or to express despair and the wish to escape, rather than a genuine intent to die. Most people who attempt suicide do not complete suicide on a first attempt; those who later gain a history of repetitions are significantly more at risk of eventual completion.

Nearly a million people worldwide die by suicide annually. There are an estimated 10 to 20 million attempted suicides every year. Elderly males have the highest suicide rate, although rates for young adults have been increasing in recent years.

According to the Independence Hall Association in Philadelphia, the first bank robbery in America happened during the night of August 31 or the early morning of September 1, 1798 at the Bank of Pennsylvania at Carpenters' Hall. The vaults were apparently robbed of $162,821, or approximately $1.8 million in 2006 dollars. Because no forced entry evidence existed, authorities assumed it was an "inside" job. Several suspects were immediately imprisoned and prosecuted, but the culprits eventually charged were a man, Isaac Davis, and a partner. Within days of the heist, Davis' partner fell victim to a plague of yellow fever that ravaged Philadelphia that summer.

Graffiti (singular: graffito; the plural is used as a mass noun) is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property. Graffiti is often regarded by others as unsightly damage or unwanted vandalism.

Graffiti has existed since ancient times, with examples going back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. Graffiti can be anything from simple scratch marks to elaborate wall paintings. In modern times, spray paint and markers have become the most commonly used materials. In most countries, defacing property with graffiti without the property owner's consent is considered vandalism, which is punishable by law. Sometimes graffiti is employed to communicate social and political messages. To some, it is an art form worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions. However, the public generally frowns upon "tags" that deface bus stops, trains, buildings, playgrounds and other public property.

Breakdance, breaking, b-boying or b-girling is a street dance style that evolved as part of the hip hop movement among African American and Puerto Rican youths in the South Bronx of New York City during the early 1970s. It is normally danced to pop, funk or hip hop music, often remixed to prolong the breaks, and is a well-known hip hop dancebreakdancer, breaker, b-boy or b-girl refers to a person who practices breakdancing.

Since its inception, breakdancing has provided a youth culture constructive alternative to violent urban street gangs. Today, breakdancing culture is a remarkable discipline somewhere in-between those of dancers and athletes. Since acceptance and involvement centers on dance skills, breakdancing culture is usually free of the common race, gender and age boundaries of a subculture and has been accepted worldwide.

In the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed that the souls of the dead could return to earth and haunt the living. The belief in revenants (someone who has returned from the dead) is well documented by contemporary European writers of the time, such as William of Newburgh and Walter Map. According to the Encyclopedia of Things that Never Were, particularly in France during the Middle Ages, the revenant rises from the dead usually to avenge some crime committed against the entity, most likely a murder. The revenant usually took on the form of an emaciated corpse or skeletal human figure, and wandered around graveyards at night. The "draugr" of medieval Norse mythology were also believed to be the corpses of warriors returned from the dead to attack the living. The zombie appears in several other cultures worldwide, including China, Japan, the Pacific, India, and the Native Americans.

The western genre, particularly in films, often portrays the conquest of the wilderness and the subordination of nature in the name of civilisation or the confiscation of the territorial rights of the original inhabitants of the frontier. The Western depicts a society organised around codes of honor, rather than the law, in which persons have no social order larger than their immediate peers, family, or perhaps themselves alone. The popular perception of the Western is a story that centres on the life of a semi-nomadic wanderer, usually a cowboy or a gunfighter.

In some ways, such protagonists could be considered the literary descendants of the knight errant which stood at the center of an earlier extensive genre. Like the cowboy or gunfighter of the Western, the knight errant of the earlier European tales and poetry was wandering from place to place on his horse, fighting villains of various kinds and bound to no fixed social structures but only to his own innate code of honour. And like knights errant, the heroes of Westerns frequently rescue damsels in distress.

The technology of the era - such as the telegraph, printing press, and railroad - may be evident, usually symbolising the imminent end of the frontier. In some "late Westerns", such as The Wild Bunch, the motor car and even the aeroplane are referenced. Weapons technology is very evident and a recurring theme is the merit of the latest piece of "hardware", be it a repeating rifle produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company or a Colt Single Action Army handgun. Dynamite also features somewhat, both as a blasting agent and as a weapon, and to a lesser extent the Gatling gun.

The Western takes these elements and uses them to tell simple morality tales, usually set against the spectacular scenery of the American West. Westerns often stress the harshness of the wilderness and frequently set the action in a desert-like landscape. Specific settings include isolated forts, ranches and homesteads; the Native American village; or the small frontier town with its saloon, general store, livery stable and jailhouse. Apart from the wilderness, it usually the saloon that emphasises that this is the "Wild West": it is the place to go for music (raucous piano playing), girls (often prostitutes), gambling (draw poker or five card stud), drinking (beer or whiskey), brawling and shooting. In some westerns, where "civilisation" has arrived, the town has a church and a school; in others, where frontier rules still hold sway, it is, as Sergio Leone said, "where life has no value".

Blaxploitation is a film genre that emerged in the United States in the early 1970s when many exploitation films were made that targeted the urban black audience; the word itself is a portmanteau of the words "black" and "exploitation." Blaxploitation films starred primarily black actors, and were the first to feature soundtracks of funk and soul music. Variety magazine credited Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song with the invention of the blaxploitation genre, although others concede that because the film was conceived and produced independently and directed by a black filmmaker, the Hollywood-financed film Shaft is closer to being blaxploitation, and thus, is more likely to have begun the genre.

Fantastic Mr. FoxThe book tells the story about a fox, simply named Mr. Fox. At night, he steals animals from the farms of Bunce, Boggis, and Bean, three mean farmers, to feed his family with. The farmers are fed up with this, and try everything to kill him. They surround the hill he lives in with men armed with guns. After three days of starving, Mr.Fox and his children dig a tunnel to Boggis' chicken house number one, and steal a few chickens. They also raid Bunce's storehouse and Bean's underground cellar of apple cider. They invite everyone to a feast made from the loot and decide never to go above ground anymore.
